PostSubject: Drives Tue Jun 11, 2013 8:42 am

At the moment I am thinking about my drives.
What makes me hungry, what makes me satiated.
What drives me.

Nothing, Void -------- < Drive > -------- Fulfillment, Completeness
(no activity) ---------- (activity) --------------- (no activity)

Drive, desire, need?,..

Nothing n Completeness - Two absolute poles which can't be reached. Life is activity and lies between those two.
The strength of activity is increased when one is in balance, near the middle, in between Nothing and Completeness.
The activity decreases when one is closer to any of those poles.
This balance is maintained with the mastering of ones' drives.
Like, fear and hunger are part of a drive. The struggle with those forces focuses the drive and the gap between Nothing and Completeness widens, activity increases.
Keeping the balance becomes more difficult, as the activity increases.
It isn't possible to reach Fulfillment or Nothing for that matter. To come closer to it some advocate the reduction of activity, to close the gap between those two poles.
That is the reduction of activity, of life.

That's part of what I have come up with (as in picked up and mixed together). I do think it's an individual thing, probably the individual thing, to follow the drive(s).

Fear for example can make a man freeze up if it’s not controlled – or he can block it out entirely, not experiencing it at all, which diminishes his activity – or he can tame it and experience it, use it to sense danger or feel exhilaration because of his sharpened awareness.

Our habits*, the world we create, our surroundings, they reinforce our mindset.
It's the physical manifestation which is more resiliant to change. A thought can be fleeting - an inactive object less so. In other words, the physical reality is the more stable memory, it's the mirror which reminds us of our past activity, which can be an anchor**.

So, drives are kept in balance, are fostered, by the active, the activity of the mind and then they are grounded, somewhat for a some time, in the physical. A balance between the active adjustment of a drive in the mind and the grounding in the physical.

A masculine spirit wants to manifest his activity, his drives in the physical - to create.
A feminine spirit wants to be the vessel for the physical - to receive.
The male is supported by his receiving part, his senses, his perception which together with his active part forms his awareness.
The female is supported by her discriminative part, to not be a vessel for just anybody or anything.

I tried to find something on Hellenic asceticism. Almost all articles mention a greek root of asceticism but continue to write about christian asceticism or some eastern tradition.

It's even difficult to find a simple translation.
Oxford dictionary: askesis - the practice of severe self-discipline, typically for religious reasons;
late 19th century: from Greek askēsis 'training', from askein 'to exercise'

I think, it's training or to exercise, to practice.
The usual other fluff, associated with ascetisism is the christian interpretation/version of it, I guess.

So, Hellenic asceticism is the training, the exercise to try to know the self and to 'live' the self?

Yes.....the root word for both asceticism and athleticism: ασκιση.

To exercise the mind/body. To use stress as a way of becoming more durable, more tolerant, more strong, more self-controlled.
Athleticism is, after all, the learned control over muscle, and its efficient usage.

Thank You.

That makes me think that to know oneself becomes the reason and the purpose of activity, or it can be...

To overcome fear is then the continuous struggle with the experience of need and suffering, to master it. Which means to experience it bravely. Life grows along the lines of need and suffering which are an expression of the self in the flux.

Those who are more willing to engage life, to experience need and suffering are stronger. Those who seek to escape it become weaker.

To make someone weaker, one would have to make it easier for them to escape, to promise something for being more passive. To create distractions, to numb the experience of need. And people will even pay those who offer them those solutions.

Hierarchy

Courage = Degree of fear being mastered

Gnosis/Awarness = Degree of ignorance the unknown being corrected

Strength = Degree of weakness

Life = Degree of death being resisted

Becoming = Degree of approach towards Being

The mind and the intelligence it produces originates from the body. Mind and body form a unity.
That intelligence, its capabilities of reasoning enable us to be what we are. It enables our bodies to be what they are at the moment. Where to from here? Some would suggest to leave the body behind and follow wherever the mind wants to go. Others want to get rid of the mind and revert back to a body which doesn't produce the level of self-awareness and intelligence we have.

The dichotomy presented is either mind or body but almost never both.
In the middle of those polar extremes is where needs, and awareness of those needs, together, their product, create the greatest pain. Needs x Awareness...maximized.
This is where the projected goals are in alignment with the needs of the body.
This is the meaning of destiny.
The realization of destiny.
