Rights v Responsibilities Empty
PostSubject: Rights v Responsibilities Rights v Responsibilities EmptySat Feb 01, 2014 10:08 pm

A number of pharmacists are refusing to dispense prescriptions for the birth control pill and the morning after pill, citing reasons that it is against "their beliefs".   Some pharmacists have refused to transfer the prescription to another pharmacy or even to return it to the woman.

Are these pharmacists justified in doing this, or should they be forced to fill a legal prescription, even though they personally object to it.  I would expect a pharmacist to fill a valid, legal prescription, however, could it be a defensible argument that a drug such as Plan-B could be refused, on the grounds the pharmacist is a pro-lifer.

This is similar to a Muslim refusing to sell alcohol to Satyr.

Western societies used to be run more with the carrot rather than with the stick method. But, as the carrot becomes less and less seductive, we see a return to the stick approach. The stick is the beginning of the end of social order, it's a downward spiral.
If someone actively aggresses against you then you may very well use the stick and hit them back, with at least the same strength of force. But if you use the stick to control passivity then it only enforces undesired behaviour in the long run.

But if you are about the immediate short-term result then sure, force the pharmacist to do your, eh, society's bidding.
