I'm sure many of you have heard that word before: Hipster. It remains, vaguely, defined. Hipsters are a modern sub-culture of often progressive ( politically ) youth who shun the general mainstream, dress ironically, and converse about extremely obscure topics in an ambiguous fashion.

You will find hipsters hanging out in local coffee shops, pretentiously, discussing some obscure babble while sticking their noses up to anyone who isn't a hipster. But beware, don't ever, verbally, identify one as a ' hipster '; they get irate when you do this.

The hipster is an attempt at breaking away from the perceived mainstream narrative; a subconscious recognition of mass conformity and shallowness, a will towards uniqueness. often times, not grounded in profound genuineness, but a desire to, merely, be perceived by others as edgy, a show. Content and quality do not matter; if it is mainstream, it is mainstream - automatically disqualified. This leads to inevitable self-parody.

Based on the photo: 'hipster' = affected bum (a fruity one).

In what universe is the photo's subject admirable?

Can't be the one I'm livin' in.

Take a stroll through NYC, and you shall find them there. Hell, they are even migrating to Tijuana, Mexico!

I have actually talked to some of them here in Tj, they are usually void of any real critical thinking, the things they talk about pure shallowness, even though they regard themselves as unique they are all litle bolsheviks zombies spouting the same common lies as everyone else, they are totally irrelevant i dont think they really need to be discussed abaout

I've encountered one Hipster on youtube who goes by the username " Ben Carruth ". He is the only hipster that didn't annoy the shit out of me. Here is the link to his channel, if anyone is interested:    https://www.youtube.com/user/TheCarruths

I was thinking about moving to TJ one time, but last time I was down there, I was almost abducted and raped by a couple of peculiar homosexuals. I have family in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero. I would move there, but it's too far from the border. Need to work in the states.

After reading the paper posted in the Dandy thread, I don't think you can equate Hipster with Dandy.  There's an intensity and discipline in the dandy that you don't see in the Hipster.  Also, at least the Hipsters that I'm thinking of, shun athleticism.  Are there any Hipsters that have attempted to turn their life into poetry?

From that paper:

Quote :
In our own time dandyism is as rare as ever. L’homme sensible moderne has the upperhand, I think, though he takes some strange forms. We are surrounded, here on our decadent campus as much as anywhere, by  fops – not by dandies. This morning I walked to campus behind one advertising his foppery by wearing flip-flops at this time of year. The fop follows the rules of affectation in order to communicate a kind of personalstatus based on qualities uncultivated by him – personal features that are accidental: goodbreeding, for instance (which I am not opposed to per se ). Whatever is displayed on theoutside by the fop is intended to communicate material status, and an inner phantasmagoria based on receiving experiences estimated by magnitude and quantity. Foppery is not a way of being that brings outside and inside together through beauty, grace, and activity based on realizing good taste

They seem to me a response to the materialism of the 80s. The young adults of the 80s were the ones who grew up during an explosion of the financial/tech/trade market, in which massive fortunes were formed out of thin air, in which you too could have a ferrari as long as you had enough cunning and a good business idea. These men became adults who want things, who think they can "make it" and who might feel a bitterness to not have made it.
Their children, today's young adults, reject those ambitions, if only in appearance, and attempt to make a statement about the uncool, the unfashionable. They shop in thrift stores and prize old and outdated gadgets. It is, of course, only appearance, as these young adults never worked a day until they were 18 and had money from their parents to buy their designer distressed shirts with wolf prints and pre-made wear holes, and now that they are old enough to work, they need people to tell them what to do a million times if that's what it takes, and if you don't, you're bullying them.
"Ironically", this has become quite fashionable.

Hipsters is more or less bohemians. Lefty Ironic alternative laid back oddly fashionable - vintage cloths, salvation army clothes - postmodern

or really seem to be to whoever is categorizing them this way. I don't think many people label themselves hipsters.

Good at negative criticism and not being swept up into some trends and modern hallucinations - many aspects of consumerism, for example - and generally distrusting authority. Not so good at actually coming up with something new. Better thinkers than most of the people out there. But then also quite likely to get caught up in the anti-norm norms they have.

You can equate overuse of irony with postmodernism with stasis. It is a step up from going with the flow though.

Sure, though my sense, perhaps distorted by time, is that beatniks were one kind of bohemian/hipster. One could more exactly describe their culture.

Precisely; metrosexuals are very clean-cut, into mainstream fashion, and athleticism. Hipsters shop at thrift stores, wear beards, and are apathetic to athleticism. Hipsters are very alternative. And yes, there is one hipster I know of that has turned his life into poetry: Ben Carruth.
