religion and art are one in the same; both a mating call
every human abstraction which is externalized, i.e., shared, communicated, via a medium, is art. Mating calls are reactions to mortality. Procreativity - creativity - is a reaction to life's ephemerality.
Hedonism is the means reduced to an end in itself. An animal does not know, or understand, why it needs to eat, drink and to seasonally copulate, all it knows is an impulse and the reward of pleasure it feels when it gratifies a need. A manimal wants to return to this state of incomprehension - it is a feminine ideal since pleasure is where her sexual powers attain a height of effectiveness - reasoning - masculine insight - reduces such effects. As a agency of natural order the feminine expresses a desire to return to it; emasculated man is the source of nihilism, and behind every attempt to control and to harness nature, or even to change it or deny it.

Here Schopenhauer's insight - derived from eastern traditions - ought to be taken seriously, but not his response/reaction.
Pleasure, he said, is a negative e sensation; the experience of gratifying need/suffering - the experience of existing, i.e., how life experiences its own existence within the flux - interactivity - draining it of resources and producing attrition upon its form. An ephemeral state which is accompanied by mental stress, called ennui. Alleviating physical stress increases mental stress. When procreativity is impossible then creativity must substitute. This is why many philosophers failed to reproduce - channelling libidinal energies towards other objectives.
Here we see the existential connection of need/desire, or lack and excess as a product of lack - successful coping mechanisms produce excess as a by product which must then be expunged.
Need = lack, experience of spatial/temporal attrition. Desire = excess, experience of excess - by-product of successfully dealing with lack - accumulating energies either to be directed towards growth - low life forms - or maintained as a reserve for the fight/flight mechanism - higher life forms - or to be redirected towards reproduction, and in the higher life forms towards artistic creativity, viz., expunging excess energies - libidinal - by reconverting them into external forms, via an alternate medium.
