American identity has no organic ethnic tribal reality. It is strictly abstract, political, an ideological miasma, the only real "social construct". The key rule of thumb: self-awareness is a failure for most individuals, and even a disaster. Most need an authority, a collective to take charge of their decision-making and thinking processes. The idea of an inner life is what many are attracted to, but when left on their own to explore it, they fall apart into madness. This is exactly why intellectual vocations like science and philosophy were reserved for aristocratic and elite groups of men, with healthy balanced temperaments and self-control. Knowthyself isn't only an intellectual pursuit, but an organic holistic one; both mind and body must be stable and in spiritual accord, both must be able to manage the suffering of what self-consciousness reveals about nature and themselves. The average mind, the common man's mind, is no higher than an ape's, than an animal's. Self-awareness for them, causes extreme anxiety, unstable emotion, self-destructive behavior. Can you imagine a wild animal becoming aware of itself? Not much different for these american masses. Take a look at blacks as good examples.
America is the only self-deceiving country where its individualism can only be actualized by its collectivism. It's non-conformist conformity.
