And that covers it.
If I were to enter the field of psychiatry or psychology I would be doing it out of meaningful pursuit of helping.
Cognitive and neuroscience has proven all too well the effects the physical infrastructure can have on the mind. There is plenty of proof for it, and any argument that mental illness is some kind of issue of will power is utter nonsense.
Recently read an article in The Atlantic that pointed out that Whitman, the bell tower killer, had been complaining for some time before the incident of sudden urges to kill. He had even asked in his suicide note that science look into his brain and find out if there wasn't something physically wrong with his brain. After, his request was honored and his instincts were proven to be right:
They found a tumor that was pushing up against, and therefore compromising the part of his brain that participated in impulse control.
Right now, 99% of the people on death row have a particular genetic string that scientists have associated with anti-social behavior.
So there is every reason for believing in the success story you claim as concerns psychiatric drugs.
The irony, to me, is the insistance of the free-willers here, who claim to have their assertions rooted in reason and objectivity, on the old ghost in the machine/dualism of christianity.
