An old friend Empty
PostSubject: An old friend An old friend EmptySun Sep 11, 2011 10:35 pm

I got a phone call from an old friend today. He is lead singer in a goth/extreme scene band, and by that I mean also a Marilyn Manson look alike, Ozzy Ozzborne bat-head-eating on stage GG Allin type actor (he gets kicked out of shows).

Well anyway, aside from his eccentric nature, I couldn't help but pick up on his gibbery, so-fast-can't-hear-what-I'm-saying tone of voice. It was low, and little snotty and sharp.

I suppose there are people who feel the need to fill in every second with a word, to pick the vocab words sounding best for an 'intellectual', and this somehow makes them appear more 'ontop of things'. It is an attitude of...you are too slow to catch-up, but at the same time there is a carelessness to it. Since he was talking so fast, nothing he said was even worth his own breath. It was almost as if to say "I'm boring myself". Like he needed to be able to hear himself speak the way he did, so that he could even stand to be on the phone.

Every other sentence I managed to utter out, he would quickly snap back with some bit of rhetoric, sarcasm, or other form of showing his aloofness. After the conversation ended, he was sure to tell me to take care of myself and stay out of trouble etc. after having had repeatedly tell me things like "I say this because I'm your friend", or "I hope not to sound too judgmental", and "you should really do this". No matter what, he and his hyperspeed advice was the mainstay.

Is this out of fear that he will be seen as uninteresting, or not on crack? (I jest)

I believe it stems from a complex....maybe one I had passed on, or that we shared long ago about not wanting to 'fit in' and being as outrageous and 'above-it-all' as we possibly could at age 14. Something I seem to have semi-grown out of, and that he has invested his entire life, career, and appearance into.

Just some thoughts and an excuse to rant What a Face

The hardest things to learn:

To be still, and to be silent.

Indeed. Slavoj Zizek is guilty of the same kind of hyper-excessive verbosity. He blames it on his fear that if he stops talking, if he stops entertaining, just for a second, then people will no doubt become conscious of how utterly uninteresting, how unworthy of their time he is -- as if by becoming silent, he will cease to exist and we will all forget he's there at all.

This seems to be the case with many nervous hyper-talkers: they are always compensating.

Very insightful, thanks! :]

Never knew Zizek admitted such a thing. Then again, in order to become a popular philosopher/speaker without waiting 100 years, that is one of the general requirements.

I bet ten dollars Poison will become this band's leading groupie mascot within the coming months.

It seems to be a trait more common amongst the young.

There's a girl where I work, only 20 and very pretty, who talks incessantly when in conversation. What's more, she always seems to be guiding the conversation away from anything interesting and into the realm of generalized observations and mindless banter. It's not even gossip, as that might constitute a danger.

There's also an aloofness present, as Poison noted.

You're right. Age has got nothing to do with it. Perhaps maturity?

I would say more like lack of self-awareness....etc ;]]

They are too busy running their mouths to notice it's actually just the runs.... and coming out their asses.

No. I thought he was in his early-mid twenties.

He talks like a child... one day I'll rule the world, you're all cunts, blah, blah, blah.

This is more serious than I thought.

Perhaps intelligence.

It never increases with age...it simply becomes more focused and so more efficient.

That's interesting, I can see that, to an extent. She seems more concerned with social graces and niceties rather than intelligent discussion which leads anywhere. And she does come across as rather aristocratic and high falutin'. I don't want to judge her too harshly though, what if she's just insecure or a little shy? Sometimes, though, I can just sit back and see her mind working, see the paths her thoughts are taking. It's like she's trying to find a way out... but there isn't one.

So many words... all of that simply to say that people talk too much.
If the whole internet was rewriten for content, I'd be able to fold that piece of paper and keep it in my back pocket.

It's time you question yourself on wether you suffer from the condition you diagnosed your friend with.

Maybe the monosyllabic trivialities of the monkeyboy's forum is more on your intellectual level.

I don't know, but just chilling silently over the internet seems like an absurdity.
The medium is words, language, you stupid bitch...

Maybe your posts could be folded into a nano-page that can fit into a mite's anus. \

Oops...too many words to simply say "Da bitch doth protests too much"

I don't share your opinion that verboseness equals intellectuality.
I also don't share your opinion that in a medium of words, one can't gain from staying silent.

Nor do you share my judgment.
So far no evidence that you have one, outside social conventions and girlish banter.

I don't know where it is that you keep finding these high expectations you wish to hold me to.
You don't seem to understand the satisfaction in expressing a candid, hideous mind.

Then of course, if you can go past your terribly insulted egos, you may see a thing or two about yourself that you had overlooked.
It sometimes takes an eye from the outside.

But after this one post, you have me once again confused. In one paragraph I see the interest in unmasking my allegedly concealed intellect. In the other, I see a pretty obvious "shut the fuck up".

Be kind to let me know once you've made up your mind.

The common catch phrases of highschoolers appear to be his only form of humor, such as "Failosophy" etc

He uses it as a mask, knowing that we would be unsuspecting of his lack of autistic seriousness.
