He felt his power and money slipping due to the legal status of Wagner, which had changed, and had gotten in contact with Western intelligence services or middlemen. They promised him support from within Russia for certain actions. Not sure if they sold him on a coup attempt or something else but it explains how things got set in motion. In the middle of his mutiny he then must have realized at some point that the promised support wasn't coming through.

Still not sure what the Russian side knew but they must have been very aware of the Prigozhin issue for a long time. Could very well be that they were using this to lure out all the traitors among their ranks. If we assume that Prigozhin was guaranteed support from within Russia, informed on it by Western intelligence, then it's hard to believe that he'd just take their word for it, without having some direct communication and assurances coming from those potential traitors within Russia.
