I think he means that trees are environmental depositories, spanning a tree's lifetime.
Living memories.

Trees are sanctuaries for animals but also people have at times found shelter in the woods in times of upheaval.
Speaking or listening to trees is like praying or meditation, at least that's how I would interpret it. Some might literally talk to trees. Probably better to talk to a tree than a bad priest.

Listening to wind ruffling leaves, swaying branches....is meditative.
Gaia rising to meet Uranus.
Sun god speaking to his offspring.

That being said, Hermann Hesse might be a hippie and my interpretation is too generous.
I heard about Hesse in school at some point and not in a negative light. So I suspect he fits into their post-WW2 agenda.

I'm fond of ravens. I encountered one in a forest once and it took a long moment and simply stared at me, in stillness, as if it was thinking.

They are far more alert and sharper than most other birds.

I went to a shop, even though I drove my bicycle yesterday some bird had built nest in my bicycles front basket, I feel bad for having to remove it, though when taking it out I didn't even figure out what it was, I thought children had put it in there

It looked like this and had mud on the bottom, I didn't know birds could build a nest in such a short time
