To summarise - If it's Beyonceee or Dr. Dre then mp3 will do just fine because the dynamics are missing anyhow because of the mastering, so not much lost through compression.
For more dynamic music the CD format of 44100Hz and 16 bit will be best - lossless (no information lost) compression formats like FLAC or ALAC are good when stored on a hard drive.
Hi-Res audio is more or less a scam (Neil Young the salesman) with most albums and recordings because sometimes they just convert the CD format to a new format with zero information gained. It's literally the same data but taking up more space. Other times they use the old master records, or even then only the copy of the master record which is again missing 3db of range through the analogue copy process.
Only if the recording and the mastering are done properly with Hi-Res technologies will it provide an increase in quality but even then not audible to the listener but perhaps subliminally as he hints in one segment where he talks about his recording work.
