This si where Know thyself is crucial.

Anyway....magic is the use of semiotics in a ritual form, to affect the unconscious will....the body, tapping into unconscious energies.
The conscious part of will - ego- cannot fully control its aggregate energies - because most are unknown toit and because this requires training - meditation, exercise, introspection etc.

If we put it in a slightly different context, then we must think of mind/body as two different sources of memories - body = inherited, innate, genetic memories; mind = experiential, learned - first & second hand, memetic memories.
Magic uses memetic memories to trigger genetic memories.

I would say that magic is more to do with actions, rather than words. Every morning, for example, I go outside and kneel on the earth, drawing its energy into my body through physical contact. The words I say while doing this are far less important than the act of doing it.

That sounds like the sort of magic practiced by groups like the Golden Dawn, which Wicca is an offshoot of.

I prefer to skip the ritual and go straight to the source.

Then you simply meditate, or try to quiet your mind and feel nature around you.
That's what I do, as well.

These esoteric practices are more psychosomatic - self-intixicating.
Chemical help is also effective. Many drug users experience such epiphanies.
The mind has to believe for the process to be successful.
At the end the individual feels empowered or calm, because he's recalled and expunged what he has repressed, or forgotten.
Communing with ancestors, for example, goes through this process.

Back to the topic....these transgender mutants are sometimes individuals that have repressed their feminine side - for males - or their masculine side - for females.
Their liberation is experienced as a finding their 'real self'....which is the oppressed self being liberated and feeling empowered - an epiphany.
They confuse this for their 'true identity'.

Jungian psychoanalysis speaks of this anima/animus - masculine/feminine aspect of all humans.

It's more active than that. I combine exercise with my daily communing with nature.

I certainly wouldn't use drugs though. I prefer to remain in control at all times.

Experiencing the sublime necessitates objectivity.
To experience without your will being involved - no need, no desire....only experience, only perception.
No subjectivity - no ego.

I think at base it's a psychology of dissatisfaction rationalizing an escape from that dissatisfaction: an escape from misery into the idealized happy state of the other identity. The insane person convinces themselves that their real identity is actually a trap or a deception and therefore the only way to attain peace is in attaining the other identity.
It's quite similar to how christians devalue life or the world, or 'wordliness' in favour of an idealized, transcendant other world or afterworld to escape into. The same sort of nihilism in a different manifestation, the same disease.
