It is again about the translation which, because it is wrong, leads to a great misunderstanding, as I have told you many times, e.g. with the many problems of translating Spengler's texts into English*. It is the same here with the translations of Luhmann’s texts into English (cf. from about 27:00 in the film), in this case, his passive sentence was translated into an active sentence, creating many misunderstandings. „Wie ist Bewußtsein an Kommunikation beteiligt?“ (PASSIV) was translated into „How is the consciousness participating in communication?“ (ACTIVE), which means „Wie nimmt das Bewußtsein an der Kommunikation teil“ (AKTIV). Luhmann’s basic statement in this matter is: the consciousness is not capable of communicating; the consciousness is one system, the communication is a different system; so both systems have nothing to do which each other; each of both systems is not capable of participating in the other system; so theconsciousness is not capable of participating in communication either. Luhmann’s systems are closed systems, at least in the moments in which they operate.
